Letterto J Foster Esq., Commander of the shipJoseph Fletcher
Dear Sir,
On approaching the end of our voyage we, the Chief Cabin passengers, begto express to you our sincere thanks for the kind attention you have shownus and to ensure you of our entire satisfaction with the ship itself andwith those arrangements on board, of which you have had the disposal.
Owing to great mismanagement, to the want of just consideration for thereasonable comfort of the passengers, in a word to the manner in whichMessrs Willis & Co., have met their contract with us, the causes ofdiscontent have been numerous and the expression of justifiable dissatisfactionhas been rife among us. But over this situation you have no control.
We have, however, much pleasure in testifying to your happiness to listento our complaints and, to the utmost of your power, to remedy our annoyances.
In token of our gratitude for your recent kindness and of our good wishesfor your future prosperity, we beg your acceptance of a purse containing25 guineas, requesting you to procure for yourself a gold watch bearingthe inscription ‘Presented to J Foster Esq by his Chief Cabin passengersto New Zealand per shipJoseph Fletcher1853’.
We have only to add in taking leave of you that we shall always be gladto welcome you to our adopted country and we cordially subscribe ourselves–

To the Chief Cabin Passenger perJoseph Fletcher
Ladies & Gentlemen,
Allow me to return my sincere thanks for the very handsome acknowledgementyou have made me of your satisfaction with the ship and my humble endeavoursto render the voyage as speedy and pleasant as possible; and, I deeplyregret there should have been any cause for dissatisfaction with the fulfillmentof your contract with Messrs Willis & Co., which when duly representedto them, I feel confident in asserting they will so act as to preventa repetition of such annoyances on a future occasion.
In taking leave of you, I beg to express my best wishes for your futurewelfare and prosperity in this land of much promise.
I am, ladies and gentlemen,
Yours very sincerely, John Foster
