The first of the Royal NZ Mail Co. steamships arrived in harbour under canvas.
On 17 August they experienced a terrific thunderstorm during which a large ball of fire passed across the ship between the fore and main mast and fell into the sea alongside…..The passengers landed in high spirits, there were no deaths…..’ ‘…Captain Stewart sailed on HM Sophia to the Arctic searching for Sir John Franklin and wears the Arctic Medal….’
